Mustafa Kemal Atatürk

Today we visited Atatürk Mausoleum so now something about the most famous person in turkish history. So crazy that I only get 2000 hits when I seach for him in swedish. He is the turkish version of Gustav Vasa - a nation hero!

So here goes the story:

Little Mustafa was born 1881 in what is now Greece. He started military school and were struggeling in the Gallipoli war and there became a military hero.
After World War I the Ottoman Empire lost huge parts of the country to Italy, England and Russia. Atatürk could not accept this, so he started the Turkish War of Independence. They won and at October 29 1923 the Republic Turkey was officially proclaimed.

Atatürk became the first president and got at that time the name Atatürk which means "Father of Turks". At that time Turkey was a shattered country, but Atatürk managed to unite it to one people. He made a lot of reforms to the country, who were at that time far behind rest of Europe. For exemle he introduced the European alpabet instead of the Arabic. He also did huge improvements in the law system, education system and for women rights.

He died of liver cancer in 1938.
