Inside Selimiye Mosque

The mosque was commissioned by Sultan Selim II and was built by architect Mimar Sinan (same architect as Blue Mosque), finished in 1574.
Çiler told the myth about the inverted tulip at the place of the preacher. Rumor has it that when a place was looked for Selimiye Mosque upon the Sultan’s order in Edirne which was reputable for its tulips, the lady owner of the tulip garden did not want to sell her garden. She was convinced after long efforts, but she sold her property with the condition that the mosque to be built had to have something to remind herself.
